In march, there was a lot going on in the CTS meeting room at TU Wien: 15 curious girls came to visit to get to know the university and lose their shyness about a technical university. The afternoon began with an exciting quiz about the university, computer science and women in technology, which warmed up the visitors and aroused their curiosity.

Afterwards, the girls had the opportunity to meet some impressive role models. Laura Kovacs, computer science professor at TU Wien, Martina Landmann, project organizer of the EduLab, as well as PhD students Sophie Rain and Eva Wagner talked about their paths to TU Wien and their current activities. The girls listened to the stories with great interest and asked many questions. Together they realized that computers and mathematics are actually not that bad and are even quite exciting.

At the end of the afternoon, things got practical: the girls built towers and programmed robots using color codes to find their way to their destination. After 1.5 hours of fun and learning, the visitors unfortunately had to say goodbye.

“What, it’s over already? But it’s only just begun!”

Such lively and inspiring afternoons are rare in everyday university life. A big thank you goes to the EduLab for the time and commitment of the role models and the loan of the great Ozobots. Many thanks also to the Samariter Bund: the wonderful PowerLeo project enabled us to reach so many girls.

We hope to see some of the girls again as students at TU Wien in a few years’ time.
