Abstract

The project explores the cultural landscape of the cellar lanes, their potential for future development and the options for long-term preservation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Said aspects concern questions of the historical, social, cultural, ecological, economic and touristic importance of these forms of vernacular architecture as well as the technical possibilities in the area of innovative, transdisciplinary surveying methods (3D laser scanning, quadrocopter, radon measurement, soil analysis). The focus is placed on networking activities between various research disciplines as well as on direct cooperation within the framework of research-led teaching.

Outcome Summary

The CTS project made it possible to pursue an interdisciplinary approach and thus a broad methodological approach and to network research institutions such as the TU Wien, FH Campus, the University of Vienna, the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute as well as the AGES. Because CTS promotes exactly these holistic approaches, it was possible to pursue innovative, creative and also unconventional research approaches and thus to look beyond disciplinary limitations. The result of the project is a basic document on the necessary future research activities to achieve World Heritage status, which at the same time serves as a basis for the submission of further research applications required for this purpose. In addition, an in-depth, long-term cooperation between the partner institutions could be established, the definition of the parameters for preservation requirements in the course of an authentic preservation of the cellar alleys could be discussed, and a practical application of necessary structural measures of the press house and cellar renovation as well as evaluation on the object could be carried out.
