On June 24, 2026, the team of TU Wien’s CTSi traveled to Brno to visit our alliance partner, the Brno University of Technology, in order to accompany the EULiST Science Communication Training as part of the annual EULiST Student Conference – the format that the CTSi helped develop as the lead of the working group of the same name within the alliance.
The visit thus provided a valuable setting to become better acquainted with methods and approaches for communicating scientific content in a clear and audience-appropriate way.
At the beginning, participants received a concise theoretical input on the fundamentals of science communication. The focus was on key principles such as adapting content for different target audiences, using clear, accessible language, and selecting appropriate formats. It was highlighted that effective science communication largely depends on tailoring messages to specific audiences and selecting appropriate communication channels, such as texts, social media, events, or visual formats.
In the subsequent practical part, participants directly applied what they had learned. In an interactive group exercise, they worked with scientific posters and were tasked with preparing the content for a specific target audience. The options included journalists, funding agencies, and ten-year-old children. The aim was to adapt the same content linguistically, structurally, and in terms of complexity depending on the audience, ensuring it was as understandable as possible. The results were then presented and discussed collectively, making different approaches and strategies visible.
The insights gained provide an important foundation for developing similar formats at TU Wien. Plans are underway to bring the Science Communication Training to TU Wien during the coming semester and again next year, making it available to TU Wien staff, junior researchers, and senior researchers. In doing so, the CTSi supports TU Wien’s strategic goal of strengthening the exchange of knowledge, methods, and technologies. At the same time, collaboration within the EULiST Alliance fosters networking across national borders and contributes to enhancing TU Wien’s international visibility.
