On September 8 and 9, 2026, the CTSi (Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation), together with the CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing , will serve as a co-host of the international IFIP HCC17 “Human Choice and Computers” Conference at TU Wien. The renowned conference of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) brings together experts from academia, research, and practice to discuss current questions surrounding human-AI interaction and the societal implications of digital technologies.

On June 23, 2026, this year’s CTSi//midsommar.2026 took place in the Böcklsaal at TU Wien, bringing together participants from research, education, and professional practice for a shared afternoon of exchange. The event focused on the question of how social innovation can be shaped in the context of artificial intelligence and increasingly agentic systems.

EULiST (European Universities Linking Society and Technology)

On June 24, 2026, the team of TU Wien’s CTSi traveled to Brno to visit our alliance partner, the Brno University of Technology, in order to accompany the EULiST Science Communication Training as part of the annual EULiST Student Conference – the format that the CTSi helped develop as the lead of the working group of the same name within the alliance.

Innovation in academic communities rarely happens by accident. It is typically the result of intentional design decisions – creating the right structures, incentives, and spaces for ideas to evolve. This is precisely the rationale behind a new initiative at the upcoming GALA Conference 2026 in L’Aquila. The conference is sharpening its strategic focus on innovation – and a key signal of that shift is the introduction of a dedicated Work-in-Progress (WiP) paper track. Notably, this track is not an incremental addition, but a deliberately designed format co-created by René Röpke and Vanissa Wanick.

On April 29, 2026, the CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing hosted its first Public Evening Lecture as part of the new Science Insight series of the Responsible Tech & Society Forum. Under the title “What counts as computer science? Examining epistemic cultures in computing and their consequences” Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ben Wagner and PhD Gabriel Grill discussed the historically shaped epistemic cultures of computer science and their societal implications.

On 23 April 2026, the Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi) hosted an interactive workshop as part of the TU Wien Girls’ Day 2026, aimed at girls aged 13 to 14. The workshop sought to introduce young participants, in an age‑appropriate manner, to key questions surrounding digital technologies and to support them in reflecting consciously on their role in digital spaces.

On 10 March 2026, the first Vienna MINT Stakeholder Forum took place in the Volkshalle of Vienna City Hall. With around 220 participants, the event offered a comprehensive overview of the wide range of actors, programmes and initiatives working towards a strong MINT education landscape in Vienna.

On February 17, 2026, TU Wien and CTSi hosted the NCP:IP Women*Networking event, which took place under the title “Social Innovation in Practice: Technologies in the Context of Societal Challenges.” The venue was the historic Böcklsaal, an ideal setting for a meeting dedicated to the exchange of ideas on socially relevant innovation issues.

With her expertise at the intersection of technology, society, and collaborative design, Assoc. Prof. DI Dr. Hilda Tellioğlu participated as a keynote speaker at the MERCADO Workshop (Multimodal Experiences for Remote Communication Around Data Online) on November 2, 2025, at IEEE VIS 2025, where she contributed important conceptual impulses. The IEEE VIS conference is considered a leading international forum for visualization and visual analytics and took place in 2025 at the Vienna Convention Center.

In the past semester, the CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing once again hosted an insightful and inspiring Brown Bag Seminar series that focused on current topics at the intersection of computer science, ethics, and society. Under the guiding theme of Responsible Computing, researchers, practitioners, and students came together to discuss key questions of responsibility in the digital age.

On commission from the Austrian National Bank (OeNB), CTSi researched the extent of digital financial exclusion in the context of the digital euro.

René Röpke, head of the TU Wien Informatics eduLAB and lead of the CTSi//circle.didactics , moderated the event and invited the audience to view and experience the new rooms of the TU Wien Informatics, in the heart of the Informatics building at Favoritenstraße 9-11 in 1040 Vienna.

On September 17 and 18, 2025, CTSi represented TU Wien and EULiST at EUDRES’ inspiring Focus on the Future Summit organized by EUDRES at Drosendorf Castle . The event focused on the question of how universities can draw on the lessons of history to develop in a future-oriented way.

As the academic lead of the Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi), Assoc. Prof. DI Dr. Hilda Tellioğlu significantly shaped the 1st Future Talks by the Lake on 4 September 2025 with her keynote contribution. The event, held under the theme “Future Challenges in the World of Work” and organized by the Production Union of Carinthia (PRO‑GE Kärnten) and the Institute for Social Policy (IGES), brought together representatives from trade unions, politics, academia, and industry at the PRO‑GE Recreation and Education Center in Krumpendorf at Lake Wörthersee.

From August 25 to 29, 2025, the EUSSET Summer School took place at TU Wien, an inspiring and intensive format for international doctoral students and professors in the field of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). The host was Univ.Prof. Hilda Tellioglu, who, with great dedication, made possible a week full of exciting lectures, project work, and exchange.

On 27 June 2025, Assoc. Prof. DI Dr. Hilda Tellioğlu participated as a panelist at SPEAK OUT 2025, the future‑ and sustainability‑focused festival hosted by KURIER futurezone, held at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. The event brought together experts from business, academia, and civil society to discuss pressing questions surrounding digital transformation.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Kevin M. Blasiak has been awarded a highly competitive research grant under the 1000 Ideas Programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), leading pioneering work at CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing.

As part of the performance agreement for the 2025–2027 period, the former Center for Technology & Society (CTS) is sharpening its thematic focus on Social Innovation.

René Röpke has been appointed Game Competition and Exhibition Chair for the Games and Learning Alliance Conference 2025 (GALA), alongside Kristina Risley from the University of Southampton, UK. The international conference will take place this year in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and gathers leading voices from academia, industry, and education in the field of serious and game-based learning.

The CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing is hosting the last brown bag talk of the semester on Digital Laziness: Why the Real AI Risk Is Human Surrender with Dr. Patrizia Ecker who is researcher, author, and founder of the AI Literacy Alliance.

As part of an inspiring exchange with the University of Twente, the Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi) at TU Wien hosted an interdisciplinary workshop on the responsible use of AI, as well as the participation of the guests in the TECH DESIGN SPRINT 2025 – two formats that exemplify international collaboration and ethics-oriented technology development in action.

As a recognised scientist and expert in learning technologies research, René Röpke has been invited as a keynote speaker and will open the Academic/Learning Analytics network meeting with his talk. The talk will take place on 28 May at TU Wien.

The CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing is hosting our next brown bag talk on Perception vs. Reality: The Illusion of Security – Why We (Erroneously) Trust Technologies in the Age of AI Revolution with Rafael Vrecar.

This April, Kevin Blasiak was invited to take part in the 2025 Milton Wolf Seminar on Media and Diplomacy, hosted at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna and co-organized by the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, the American Austrian Foundation, and the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation.

In march, there was a lot going on in the CTSi meeting room at TU Wien: 15 curious girls came to visit to get to know the university and lose their shyness about a technical university. The afternoon began with an exciting quiz about the university, computer science and women in technology, which warmed up the visitors and aroused their curiosity.

Kevin Blasiak was invited to participate in the 2025 Paris Defence and Strategy Forum as part of its academic stream, contributing to high-level discussions on the future of international security.

Anna Franzkowiak (Head of CTSi) and Heimo Sandtner (Rector of FH Campus Wien) welcomed guests to the joint Robotic Lunch in the newly opened FH Campus Wien building on 26 September 2024. The four presentations, accompanied by a good buffet, came from programme directors, department heads and dedicated students. The audience was also a mix of interested experts from various disciplines who were eager to discuss.

On September the 23rd, 2024, the latest exhibition of the Cultural Collisions project was opened, among others by the Vice Rector of Teaching at TU Wien, Jasmin Gründling-Riener.

Like the activities of the CTSi, this project also aims to combine critical, scientific thinking with creative approaches and thus make those involved and the stakeholders even better prepared for the challenges of the future.

A week full of exciting discussions, international networking and new perspectives lies behind the participants of the 8th EUSSET Summer School. From 23 to 26 August 2024, young researchers from all over the world met at TU Wien to immerse themselves in the world of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW).

CTSi participated in the 2024 Terrorism and Social Media (TASM) international conference, held on 18-19 June at Swansea University’s Bay Campus in Wales, UK.

This past semester, the CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing hosted an engaging and thought-provoking Brown Bag Seminar Series, “Exploring The Frontiers of Responsible Computing.”

The CTSi//circle.responsibleComputing is pleased to announce the recent publication of an IS Tutorial Article titled “Trigger Warning: This Study Contains Extremist Content. Research Strategies for Investigations of Online Extremism and Terrorism in the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS) by Kevin Blasiak, Marten Risius & Sabine Matook.

The YOUTH Spring School took place from 10 to 14 June as part of the YOUTH project funded by the CTSi. In the context of the project, the aim was to further develop the transdisciplinary and intersectional methodological framework for researching social inequality among young people and to engage in a translocal and transdisciplinary exchange with international academic partners and NGOs. In this regard, the YOUTH Spring School was conceived as an educational format based on the principles of academic co-production, in which the consortium partners of the project and NGOs from different regions of the world as well as international students jointly produce new forms of urban knowledge that are relevant for young people, universities and society in general. The Spring School focussed on the question of how the use of technology affects young people’s (in)equal access to and use of public space.

The FAKTory event took place on 27 February at Universitätsstraße 9, 1010 Vienna. The FAKTory was launched together with the Chamber of Labour (AK) and the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB).

On 31 January 2024, the info days “FIT: Women in Technology” took place at the FH Technikum Wien, among others. This event, which was organised as part of the AMS programme “Women in Trades and Technology” (FiT), aimed to get women interested in technical professions and pave the way for them into technology.

The YOUTH project examines youthfulness in the context of social inequality and social media platforms. The aim is to empower young people to gain access to public spaces and overcome disadvantages. A comprehensive methodological framework was developed for this purpose, which was refined in a joint spring school in order to continue the research.

After five intense days, the Summer School 2023 on “Sustainable Futures”, co-hosted by TU Austria and the Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi), came to an end last Friday. The following review looks at the event from a student’s perspective.

A year ago was the culmination of intensive planning and preparation between CTSi and AK Wien: the three-day “Hackathon of the Many” took place at TUtheSky at TU Wien. It was the ideal combination of social competences and technical know-how with the goal of digital justice!

This year’s TU Austria (TUA) Summer School has been held together with the Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi). This Summer School 2023 for pre-docs took place under the theme “Sustainable Futures”.

One year ago, the extremely exciting, multi-disciplinary content session “The (R)evolution of Socio-Technical Hybrids” took place at the European Forum Alpbach 2022.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the CTSi had the opportunity to present our ongoing project, “Storytelling for Students,” at the F&E Café held at FH Campus Wien.

The Center for Technology-driven Social Innovation (CTSi) hosted its first annual Midsommar event on Thursday, June 22, 2023. It was an afternoon that provided a platform for knowledge exchange, project presentations, and socializing.

For three days, social competency and technical know-how were the focus of a hackthon hosted by the CTSi and the Arbeiterkammer (AK). The goal: Social justice.

The thyroid gland and its hormones in the thyrotropic control loop are a complex system that regulates thyroid function. In this young field of research, medical aids based on mathematical models can shorten treatment times. The long-term goal is therefore to develop a medical assistance tool. The CTSi project formed the proof of concept for the feasibility of this assistance tool. Follow-up projects are being planned.

The aim of the cross-media project was to develop an audio game. To summarise, it is a project that tells the story of an underground catastrophe in a flooded metro system in a large city. In this game, the players are challenged purely aurally. In addition to the audio game developed, both a 3D radio play, which was published on Bavarian radio (see also ARD Audiothek), and an audio walk were created.

In this project, future first-year students are networked with students in order to make it easier for them to choose a degree programme and enter the world of higher education. Students talk about their experiences of choosing a degree programme and their first study experiences. The storytelling-by-students platform created in the project is a website on which students can share their content, including podcasts, text contributions and videos on the topics of choosing a degree programme, university life and life outside the university.

The summer school “Zukunftsland Lungau”, funded by the CTSi and the state of Salzburg, formed the basis for this project. The numerous experiences gained in the process of organising a transdisciplinary and regional summer school were collected and summarised in a digital handbook. These experiences and templates will enable future transdisciplinary summer school teams to save time, energy and resources in the organisation and focus more intensively on the content-related dimensions.

As part of the project, national and international best practices were collected and analysed in the sense of a state of the art research on the topic of technologically supported awareness raising in the areas of climate change, quality of public space and mobility by means of expert interviews. It was shown to what extent low-threshold technical artefacts (e.g. environmental sensors) are available and how they are used. The focus is on citizen science and participatory sensing as approaches for involving citizens in environmental data collection.

The thematic and content framework of the project was to explore ways in which young people and young adults with disabilities can be supported in sharing their digital skills. GoDataSpace was an exploratory research project on the governance of Urban Data Space. The aim of the project was to assess the emerging technology of Urban Data Space (U/DS) and provide the basis for future research projects and technology development in this area. The results of a series of workshops with stakeholders from research, policy, civil society and industry provide an exploratory assessment of U/DS and its governance to guide future research and inform policy.

The project focussed on the cultural landscape of the Kellergassen, their development potential and the options for long-term preservation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The result of this project is a basic document for achieving World Heritage status for the Kellergassen. In addition, the definition of the parameters for monument preservation requirements was discussed and a practical application of structural measures for cellar restoration was carried out.

This project aimed to investigate the impact of peer-to-peer (P2P) car sharing in different neighbourhoods and to identify differences in the perceptions of those who offer/use car sharing and those who do not. To this end, a comparative analysis was carried out in three different neighbourhoods.

The project combined computer science and music in an interdisciplinary approach that piqued the students’ interest, with potential for further research. MUCO was a feasibility study in the field of STEM and art, in the context of which a musical programming learning application was created for independent learning outside of formal lessons. The aim of the implemented learning app is to impart programming knowledge and skills in a musically orientated development and learning environment.

As the visibility of non-binary people increases, gender bias in language becomes apparent. As part of the project, a participatory workshop was organised in which translation guidelines for non-binary language use were developed. It became clear that there is no universal gender-appropriate strategy for language and machine translation. Although technical standardisation is necessary, it is at odds with the required diversity. The results of the project were used for further intensive research.

With the increasing digitalisation of society and almost all areas of life, the scope of action, role and responsibility of computer scientists as experts and designers of these developments is also changing. This project focussed on role models and engineering mentalities in computer science. The results show that the mindsets of engineers are often neglected, while there is great interest in questions of responsibility.

To this end, best practice scoping was developed for projects in the area of national active assisted living (AAL) projects. The aim of this participatory research project was to address the question of when, where and why ‘one-size-fits-all’ premises, i.e. the assumption that the same digital solutions could solve everyone’s problems, reach their limits when it comes to inclusive design. Based on theoretical considerations on inclusion and digitalisation, taking into account various dimensions (including legal, economic and political), a practice-relevant model for inclusive digitalisation was developed for various fields of application (e.g. inclusive schools or the economy/labour market).

The aim of the project was to identify digital education barriers (especially for underprivileged people) and to identify possible solutions. The focus was on promoting an understanding of technology in relation to digitalisation and robotics. The Lectures for Future (L4F) are an interdisciplinary lecture series offered at various universities. Researchers provide insights into their current scientific and artistic work on the topics of the climate crisis and sustainable development. The design of the teaching and communication format was scientifically monitored in the “Lectures for Future 2nd level” project. The study confirmed the added value of the Lectures for Future for society as a whole as well as the positive response from course participants and guest lecturers.

The SAVEing SPACES project sees itself as an activating project. As a safe, physical, digital and social learning space, the series of workshops carried out as part of the project was intended to promote critical exchange and offer teachers and students the opportunity to test theories, formats and tools together while learning new things and thinking about new learning. The project has provided important insights into the learning cultures of the participating disciplines and universities. The project focussed on the question of how inter- and transdisciplinary teaching is practised at the CTSi partner universities. The results showed that inter- and transdisciplinary teaching takes place in a variety of formats. Case-based learning in particular proved to be an advantageous format for didactic design, as it brings the disciplines involved into a fruitful exchange through concrete case studies and highlights the limits of expertise.

The aim of the project was to research an innovative and sustainable packaging concept. This was based on a reusable container made from nonwovens that are produced from renewable raw materials and are biodegradable. Thanks to the CTSi funding, the partners were able to prepare a high-quality BBI application for the “BioNoWo” project and submit it in summer 2020.

The aim of the project was to research the future of Automated Driving Systems (ADS) learning environments in the greater Vienna area. This was done in collaboration with the asparn.mobil LAB. Questions about systematic biases in learning environments were answered in order to be able to analyse the use of Automated Driving Systems in different contexts in more detail. In addition, guidelines for the correction of biases in training data were developed.

The summer school “Zukunftsland Lungau” was a project focussing on the topic of rural areas with a special focus on “innovation” and “gender arrangements”. During the summer school, students from five different universities and 21 study programmes lived in Lungau and developed projects on the location. This transdisciplinary project investigated how socio-technical realities are negotiated and (re-)produced in digitally expanded public spaces. The CTSi funding provided the framework for an innovative project idea for a systematic examination of social norms and power in hybrid realities. Based on questions of social participation and visibility, digital interventions were designed in transient physical spaces. These enabled the participants to explore digital realities and their reciprocal relationships with physical spaces.
